After receiving his Ph.D. in molecular biology from the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, Alan Fauconnier spent several years in academic research laboratories. He then joined the Belgian regulatory authority as a quality/CMC assessor, where he acquired an established experience in regulatory affairs rewarded by several publications. This assignment was especially focusing on the quality assessment of biological medicinal products, including vaccines, recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies and biosimilars. This experience was further enriched by interactions with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) where he was acting as the Belgian delegate at the Biological Working Party. In 2018, he joined the WHO Vaccines & Immunization Devices Assessment Team, where he was performing the review of the quality module of dossiers submitted by manufacturers to support the prequalification or the emergency use listing of vaccine candidates for supply to UN agencies or to the COVAX facility. In 2022, Alan has joined the WHO Local Production and Assistance Unit, where his experience as a quality assessor is put to good use in the provision of technical assistance to help recipients achieve compliance with international regulatory norms and standards, so that they can attain WHO prequalification. He was recently entrusted with a new responsibility, serving as Team Lead of the Laboratory Networks and Services Unit, which focuses on strengthening the capacities of official quality control laboratories for medicines and vaccines.
