Hanna Nohynek is Professor MD PhD (U.Helsinki) vaccinologist (Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) with special competences in international and travel health (Finnish Medical Association). She has co-lead /been principal investigator in several clinical trials (phase I, II, III, post-licensure of respiratory pathogens vaccines pneumococcus, Hib, influenza, covid-19, bird flu) in the Philippines and Finland, and served on several international DSMBs. She was secretary of the Finnish NITAG (2009-2023), still being a member. She was member of WHO Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (2006-12; 2020-2023), chairperson of WHO SAGE working group on covid-19 vaccines (2020-2022), and chairperson of WHO SAGE (2023-2025), and non-voting member of GAVI Programme and Policy Committee (2023-). She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Group Vaccines & Therapies for Infectious Diseases, European Medical Agency (2022-).
She has published >220 scientific peer reviewed international publications, mostly on vaccine preventable diseases and vaccines, including the first publication on narcolepsy post-Pandemrix. In addition to several vaccine safety and effectiveness related national projects, she co-led an EU-wide RSV product assessment (www.imi-promise.eu) and brand-specific influenza vaccine effectiveness projects (www.drive-eu.org). She teaches (incl.ADVAC), was founder of the EPIET vaccine module, and has mentored several MSc and PhD students.
She initiated the Finnish Vaccinators Manual, presently forming the www.thl.fi vaccines related advices to professionals, and the Finnish Travellers Advisory (Matkailijan Terveysopas), presently hosted by Duodecim, still being a member of the editorial board. She practices travel medicine at the Aava Travel Health Clinic.
She serves on boards of international organizations (icddr.b, Bangladesh, and International Vaccine Institute IVI Emeritus Trustee, South Korea), and reviews research funding applications for national and international organizations. In Finland, she is the 2nd vice chair of the Board of the Council of Päijät-Häme Wellbeing District for the election period 2025-2029, in charge of regional social affairs and health decisions.
