Dr. Don King is an elected member of the WOAH Biological Standards Commission and a WOAH (World Organization for Animal Health) expert for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and swine vesicular disease. Dr King leads the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) World Reference Laboratory for FMD (WRLFMD) and coordinates international reference surveillance and vaccine evaluation activities undertaken by the global WOAH/FAO FMD Laboratory Network which includes partnerships with other international FMD Reference Laboratories.
He has a background in veterinary virology and immunology (University of Leeds, UK and University of California, Davis, USA) and has research interests in understanding the processes that drive the evolution of positive-stranded viruses such as FMD virus. From a practical perspective, his group pioneers and applies new technologies for the detection and characterization of important livestock disease agents. These methods are deployed for routine diagnostic work and are also used to monitor the global patterns of disease, to recognize new emerging viral lineages that pose new and exotic threats.
